Accessing your Dixie or Drayton Shared Drive Space (Windows)

Page history last edited by benignim@... 1 yr ago

Before you begin:  You must have an active network connection before you can connect to Dixie or Drayton.  In addition, these servers are only available on campus.  You cannot access them from home unless you have Remote Access privileges.

Dixie and Drayton are servers on campus that allow faculty and staff to save or backup files to a secure space.  All faculty will have a space on one of the two servers. The benefits of putting files on these servers are:

  • the servers are backed up regularly so important documents won't be lost.
  • if your computer crashes you can always have access to a copy if it's on Dixie or Drayton.
  • you can access these files from any computer on campus, including the classrooms.

There are two types of accounts available on Dixie and Drayton: a personal space available only to you and a shared space available to a specified group of people (ex. a department). While the personal spaces are automatically created the shared spaces must be requested through helpdesk.

  • Personal spaces are located in Dixie/Users or Drayton/Users
  • Shared spaces are located in Dixie/Data or Drayton Data

If you are on a Windows machine and login to the Cougars domain then your computer should automatically attach to your personal Dixie/Drayton space.

To check for automatic connection

  1. Login to your computer as you normally would, using your Cougars login and password
  2. Double-click on My Computer (this icon may be on your Desktop or you may find it under your Start menu)
  3. In your My Computer window you should find a drive labelled "U". Double-click on the U drive.
  4. The U drive is your Dixie/Drayton personal server space. You can now copy and paste files into this folder or you can drag and drop files/folders into this folder.

Creating a My Network Places

If your computer does not automatically mount your Dixie/Drayton folder or if you wish to attach to a shared space on Dixie/Data or Drayton/Data then you will have to manually create a My Network Places by using the Add Network Place Wizard.

Creating a My Network Places

  1. From the Start menu, choose My Network Places
  2. From the next window, click Add a Network Place from the left side of the window. The Add Network Place Wizard appears.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Select Choose Another Network Location.
  5. Click Next.
  6. To access your personal space type

    \\Dixie\Users\lastnamefirstinitial

    OR

    \\Drayton\Users\lastnamefirstinitial

  7. To access a shared space type

    \\Dixie\Data

    OR

    \\Drayton\Data

  8. Click Next.
  9. The Add Network Place Wizard gives you the opportunity to name your user folder something meaningful or you can leave the default name.
  10. Click Next.
  11. The confirmation screen comes up to let you know all has worked as expected and tells you a shortcut for this place will be added to My Network Places.
  12. There is a checkbox beneath that asking if you want to open this network place when you finish. Make sure this box is checked.
  13. Click Finish.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You can only use Dixie or Drayton spaces to backup work related files. DO NOT backup personal photos, videos or music to this drive space.

You can now drag your work related files, folders, graphics, etc. into this file and they will automatically be uploaded to your network user folder.
