Editing Digital Video using iMovie '09

Important Facts about Digital Video:
- Digital Video is large. Approx. 5 minutes of video equals 1 GB of drive space.
- HD Digital Video is very large. Approx. 5 minutes of video equals 2-4 GB of drive space depending upon how it was shot.
- It is best captured via a firewire port.
Setting your iMovie 09 Preferences
- Open iMovie '09
- From the iMovie menu choose Preferences
- General tab > check Show Advanced Tools
- Browser tab > check Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed and check Edit next to Double-Click to
Importing Video
from a VHS tape
These instructions will vary depending upon the setup you have. These are for only one possible setup.
- Connect the VCR and the Canopus converter to the computer
- Open iMovie '09
- From the File menu choose Import from Camera, a new window appears
- Que up the video
- Click the Import button
- Name your Event or choose an existing event then click Import
- Now press the Play button on the VCR
Importing Video from your Flip Camera
Note: This lab assumes you have already installed the Flip Camera software (located on the camera itself) on your computer.
- With the Flip camera switched OFF, connect to a powered USB port on your Mac.
- Open iMovie '09
- From the iMovie ‘09 menu, select File > Import > Movies… and navigate to the DCIM/100VIDEO folder on your camera.
- Select .AVI files, choose an Event (EXISTING or NEW) and click Import. The Flip video files will start importing to your iMovie Event Library.
Note: iMovie8/iMovie9 imports Flip video files in their native .AVI format.
Note: If you cannot import the movies from the camera, make sure the 3ivx Flip camera codec is properly loaded. If not, copy the 3ivx codec from the Codecs folder on the Flip Camera to the Macintosh HD > Library > Quicktime folder on your computer. The codec is also available at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13348
Import existing movies into iMovie
- Within iMovie go to File > Import > Movies...
- From the next window choose the location of the sample videos
- Click the radio button next to Create new event
- Name the event
- Ignore the Import 1080i video dropdown menu
- Click the radio button next to Copy files
- Now click Import

Adding Additional Clips
Fine tuning clips once you've placed them on the Project timeline

- On the clip you need to edit locate the small gear icon in the lower left corner of the first clip.
- Click the Gear icon to display the dropdown menu then choose Clip Trimmer. Your clip will open in the lower part of the window in Clip Trimmer view.
- Using your mouse, click on the left side of the yellow box.
- Now using the left and right arrows on your keyboard fine tune the start of your clip.
- To edit the end of your clip click on the right side of the yellow box and use the left and right arrows on your keyboard fine tune the end of your clip. Note: zooming in helps you to edit very precisely.
- When finished click Done.
- Repeat on all remaining clips.
Deleting clips
- Click on the clip you wish to delete. Make sure the yellow selection box covers the entire clip.
- Click the Delete key on the keyboard of the computer.
- Click Edit > Undo to put the clip back.
Adding Titles
Adding Titles over Black

- Click the Title ("T") button
- Choose a title style, then click-hold and drag the title to the front of the movie. A green bar will appear before the first clip. Release the title.
- To the side a Choose Background window will appear. Double-click the background you want to use.
- To change the background double-click the title square to bring up the Title Inspector.
- click on the button next to background to choose a new color.
- click Done.
- In the preview window the title appears with generic text (Title Text Here, Subtitle Text Here).
- Highlight the text and type your title.
- To set the font size, type and color, click Show Fonts from the preview window.
- To set the duration of the title, click-hold and drag on the edge of the title in the clips pane or double-click the title square to bring up the Title Inspector and change the duration there.
- To move a title's location, click-hold and drag the middle of the title clip to the new location.
Adding Titles over Video
- Click the Title ("T") button
- Choose a title style, then click-hold and drag the title on top of the clip where the title should appear. The clip will turn blue to denote where the title will appear. You can place it at the beginning, middle or end to start off but can change it later. Release the title.
- In the preview window a black screen appears with generic text (Title Text Here, Subtitle Text Here).
- Highlight the text and type your title.
- To set the font size, type and color, click Show Fonts from the preview window.
- To set the duration of the title, click-hold and drag on the edge of the title in the clips pane.
- To move a title's location, click-hold and drag the middle of the clip to the new location.
- Now repeat for the remaining clips.
Adding Transitions
- Choose Transitions from the above button bar (square with triangles).
- Choose a transition style. If you hold your mouse over the transition you will see a preview.
- Drag the transition of your choice to your timeline between each of the clips. A green line will appear to show where the transition will be positioned.
- To edit a transition (change the type or change the duration) double-click on the transition and type in a new transition duration or select a new transition. Click Done.
Adding Photos
Importing Photos into iPhoto
- Using iPhoto to import photos
- Open iPhoto from the Macintosh HD > Applications folder or from your Dock
- From the File menu choose Import to Library
- Select the images then click Import
- The photos will now be available to iMovie
- Quit iPhoto (iPhoto > Quit iPhoto)
Adding photos to your video

- Click on the Photo icon (camera)
- Navigate through your iPhoto images
- Click and drag the image you want into your timeline. You can place the image in the timeline or overlay it onto an existing video clip. When you do this, the video's audio track continues to play.
- To delete an image, select it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
Cropping, Zooming and Panning
- Place your mouse over the image your wish to alter. Two controllers will appear on the image.
- Click on the crop icon (
) or from the gear dropdown menu choose Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation.
- The Preview window will change to show Fit, Crop and Ken Burns
- Fit - forces the image to "fit" into the aspect ratio of your video.
- Crop - allows you to crop the image to show only a certain part. when clicked a green box appears around the image.
- click and drag on the edge of the box to make the image smaller.
- click and drag in the middle of the box to move the box.
- Ken Burns - allows you to pan and zoom into the image to add movement. when clicked a green and red box appear on the image. The green box defines how the image will appear at the beginning. The red box defines how the image will look at the end.
- to force the image to zoom in make the green box large (ex. covering the entire image) and the red box smaller
- to force the image to pan resize the green box and drag it to the left of the image and resize the red box and drag it to the right of the image.
- click the Play button in the upper right corner of the preview window to preview what you've done.
- When finished, click Done in the preview window.
Adjusting the image
Alter the duration/time of the image
- Place your mouse over the image your wish to alter. Two controllers will appear on the image.
- Click on the gear icon and choose Clip Adjustments.
- Next to Duration type in the duration, in minutes and seconds.
- Click on the check box to determine if you want it to apply to only the one photo or all the photos in the project.
- When finished click Done.
Apply an effect to an image
- Place your mouse over the image your wish to alter. Two controllers will appear on the image.
- Click on the gear icon and choose Clip Adjustments.
- Next to Video Effect choose the effect you want to apply.
- Click on the check box to determine if you want it to apply to only the one photo or all the photos in the project.
- When finished click Done.
Adding Audio

Adding Background Audio to the Entire Video
- Click on the Music icon (musical notes). It will open a window at the lower-right showing iTunes, Sound Effects, GarageBand, etc.
- Once you locate the music/sound you want, click and drag it into the background area of your timeline. You'll know you've put it in the correct spot if the background turns green.
Adding Audio to a Specific Clip
- Click on the Music icon (musical notes). It will open a window at the lower-right showing iTunes, Sound Effects, GarageBand, etc.
- Once you locate the music/sound you want, click and drag it onto one of the clips. A green tab will appear underneath the clip.
- To move the audio file, click inside the clip and drag it.
- To trim the audio to play only a certain part of the file click on the gear icon and choose Clip Trimmer. Use the yellow trim bars to define the area you wish to hear.
- When finished, click Done.
- Delete the unwanted audio by selecting the green audio clip and pressing the Delete key on the computer keyboard.
Adjusting the Audio
- To adjust the audio click on the gear icon on the audio file and choose Audio Adjustment.
- From this window you can use the slider next to Volume to adjust the volume of the clip.
- Adjusting the slider next to Fade In or Fade Out will fade the audio.
- Ducking causes the audio of one clip to lower so that another clip can be heard, such as a voice-over. This happens automatically when you add a voice-over.
- Normalize Clip Volume adjusts the volumes of all the clips to the same level. Adjusting the volume slider in any normalized clip sets it to the same volume, regardless of how low or soft the original clip audio was.
Adding Voice-Over

- From the middle toolbar, click on the Microphone icon. The voiceover window opens.
- Adjust you Input Volume so that there is no red on the meter when you speak in a normal voice.
- When ready to record, click on the appropriate spot in the movie and begin your voiceover. Don't worry if you don't get it in the right place. You can always move it later.
- When finished, click again to stop the recording.
Exporting the Final Movie
For Download - Non-streamed
- Click Share > Export Movie.
- Choose the size you wish to use.
- Click Export. This method allows you to save your movies to the desktop for easy location later.
For Streamed (CofC Streaming Server, WebCT, your Blog or Wiki)
- Click Share > Export using Quicktime.
- From the Export dropdown menu choose Movie to Quicktime Movie.
- Next click Options. Under Video click Settings...
- Set Compression Type to H.264
- Under Motion set Frame Rate to 15 fps
- Key Frames set to Automatic
- Under Compressor set Quality to High
- Click OK
- Under Video click Size...
- Next to Dimensions choose 320 x 240 QVGA
- Check Preserve aspect ratio using then choose Letterbox from the dropdown menu
- Click OK
- Check the box next to Prepare for Internet Streaming
- From the dropdown choose Hinted Streaming
- Click OK
- Name your movie then click Save
For Use in iTunesU
- Click Share > iTunes...
- In the Publish your project to iTunes window check the box next to Mobile (this is the preferred setting for iTunes and the iPod/iPhone)
- Click Publish
- Note: This method saves the movie directly into your iTunes. When you go to publish it to iTunesU you will look in the Movies section in iTunes.
For Use in VoiceThread
- Click Share > Export using Quicktime.
- From the Export dropdown menu choose Movie to Quicktime Movie.
- Next click Options. Under Video click Settings...
- Set Compression Type to H.264
- Under Motion set Frame Rate to 15 fps
- Key Frames choose the radio button next to Every and type in 15 next to frames
- Under Compressor set Quality to Medium
- Click OK
- Under Video click Size...
- Next to Dimensions choose Custom then type in the dimensions 600 x 450
- Check Preserve aspect ratio using then choose Letterbox from the dropdown menu
- Click OK
- Under the Sound area click on Settings
- Change the Channels to Mono
- Click OK
- Under Prepare for Internet Stream make sure this box is NOT checked
- Click OK
- Name your movie then click Save
