Using Flickr to Post and Organize Photos

 

Flickr is an online photo management and sharing application. It enables the user to organize photos into photo albums and to tag photos for easy searching.

You can:

  • upload pictures/movies from your desktop.
  • organize them into collections and sets and tag them.
  • share them with the world or only certain people.
  • map the image to show where it was taken.

 

Flickr is located at http://www.flickr.com

 


Tour of the Application

  

  1. Using a web browser go to http://www.flickr.com and click Login.
  2. Sign in using your Flickr or Yahoo login and password.

     

  3. Your flickr homepage consists of the following:
    1. Top navigation: contains Home (this page), You (quick access to only your stuff), Organize (allows you to create sets, groups, tags, change permissions, and edit photos), Contacts (where you add friends and allow viewing permissions), Groups (compiles several users accounts into one viewable area), Explore (browse other users' accounts).

       

    2. Upload Photos: link that takes you to the uploading area.

       

    3. Your Photostream: your photostream is a visual history of everything you've ever uploaded to Flickr. Everyone who sees your photostream enjoys a different view, depending on their relationship to you and your privacy settings. For example, your family may see images in your photostream that only they can view.

       

    4. From your Contacts: shows sample photos from the users in your Contacts list.

       

    5. Everyone's Uploads: shows a random sample from any flickr users Photostream.

       

    6. Your Groups: shows photos fromm any group to which you belong.

Flickr Settings

 

The settings in flickr determine how you will be viewed by others online, the privacy and permissions settings of your account and how you view your account.

 

To get to the settings, click on your login name in the upper right corner of any flickr screen ()

 

Personal Information:

  • Your buddy icon: you can add an image or a picture of you or that represents you.
    • Click Edit to the right of the buddy icon.
    • Under Replace with an image click on On your computer.
    • Click Browse under Upload an image.
    • Choose an image from your computer and click Open.
    • Click Upload.
    • Stretch the white, dashed box over your image to define your icon.
    • Click Make the icon.
    • To get back to the settings, click on your login name again.

       

  • Your screen name: allows you to change the way you appear on the internet. To change it click Edit.

     

  • Your profile: allows you to change the information available to the internet about you. To change it click Edit.

     

  • Your photostream page layout: just allows you to change how your photostream/sets page looks. To change it click Edit.

     

  • Delete your Flickr account: allows you to delete the entire thing.

 

Privacy & Permissions:

 

1. Global Settings:
  • Who can download your stuff?: allows you to set who can download your images/videos. Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Who is allowed to share your photos or video?: When people are looking at your public items, they will see a button labeled “Share this” below the Search box. The button allows people to quickly share your public stuff with friends via email. Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Who can print your photos: Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Who can blog your stuff: Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Hide your EXIF data: The link shows on all your individual photo pages, and displays the make & model of the camera you used to take the shot. Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Hide your stuff from public searches: Hide your photos from API-based searches done outside of the Flickr website. 
  • Hide your profile from public searches: Click Edit to change these settings. 
  • Who can see what on your profile: Click Edit to change these settings.

 

2. Defaults for new uploads:

  • Who will be able to see, comment on, or add notes: Click Edit to change these settings.
  • What license will your content have: Click Edit to change these settings.
  • Who will be able to see your stuff on a map: Click Edit to change these settings.
  • Import EXIF location data: Some cameras can store GPS (location) coordinates in a photo's EXIF header. As you upload your photos Flickr can import and use that data to automatically place those photos on your map.: Click Edit to change these settings.
  • Auto-rotate your photos: As you upload photos to Flickr we can use information stored inside each file to determine its correct orientation, and if required, rotate it. Click Edit to change these settings.
  • What Safety Level and Content Type will your photostream have: Click Edit to change these settings.

 

Email

 

  • Your contact email: list the email on which you wish to be contacted.
  • Your Flickr upload email: this is the email you'll use if you wish to email photos directly to your flickr account.
  • Your blog upload email: using this email you can post directly to your blog. (the blog is setup in the Extending Flickr tab.)

 

Extending Flickr

 

  • Your printing location: allows you or those designated to order photo prints online.
  • Account links: these are configured by 3rd party applications.
  • Your blogs: allows you to add your blog to flickr, making it easy to email photos directly to your blog or to easily blog about an image already uploaded into your flickr account or other flickr users' accounts.

 


Uploading Images

 

You can upload photos using the web-based upload form, via email, via m.flickr from your mobile phone, or using the Flickr Uploadr software (http://www.flickr.com/tools/). For the purposes of this tutorial we will only use the web-based upload form.

 

  1. From inside flickr, click on the Home link.
  2. Click Upload Photos.
  3. Click on Choose photos. This will take you to your computer.
  4. Locate the images you wish to upload. You can select multiple images by using the shift key or the command key.
  5. Click Select. This will take you back into flickr.
  6. If you want to add more images, click on Add More.
  7. Set the privacy settings for this batch. Click Show more upload settings to set additional batch items.
  8. Click Upload Photos. When the upload is complete you will see Finished! Next: add a description.
  9. Click on add a description.
    • Batch Operations: Add Tags: If all of the images can contain the same tags then you can type the tags here (separated by spaces, two words should be in quotes) and click Add.
    • Batch Operations: Add to a Set: If you wish to create a set (photo album) out of ALL of these images then you can either choose an existing set or click Create a new set. If you do NOT want them to be part of a set then leave it as is.
    • Titles, descriptions, tags: This area allows you to add as much or as little information per photo as you wish.
    • When finished, click on Save this Batch. This images are now added to your Photostream.

 


Editing/Processing Images (One Image at a Time)

 

  1. Click on an image
  2. At the top of the image you will have the following options:
    • Add Note: allows you to place a highlighing box with a note on the image.
    • Send to Group: allows you to send the image to a group for editing/discussion.
    • Add to Set: allows you to add the image to an existing set.
    • Blog This: allows you to add the image to a blog (you have to have set up the blog link earlier in your settings).
    • All Sizes: This section allows you to view, link and download your image in many different sizes.
      • Next to Available Sizes click on the size you want to use
      • To download the image to a computer, click on Download the ### Size (where ### stands for the size you chose).
      • To embed an image into a webpage - Under To link to this photo on other websites you can either: choose #1. Copy the html text in the box and paste it into your web editor. Important Note: You can only embed public images.
      • To link to an image on a webpage - choose #2. Copy the url from the box and paste it into your web editor. Important Note: You can only link to public images.
    • Prints: allows you to order prints online for a fee.
    • Rotate: allows you to rotate that image.
    • Edit Photo: to edit the photo online flickr will load a Picnik plugin. If asked, click OK. You can then do basic editing: auto-fix, rotate, crop, resize, exposure, color, sharpen, and red-eye fix.
    • Delete: Deletes the image.

 


Organizing Images (Batch Process)

 

  1. From the top navigation click on Organize
  2. Choose the Batch Organize tab. This is where you can make individual or batch changes to images.
    • Edit photos: allows you to change the titles, tags and descriptions, rotate or delete the batch.
    • Permissions: you can change who can see the images, licensing, safety filter, content type and whether it appears in public searches.
    • Edit dates: you can change the date or time shift the image dates.
    • Add Tags: allows you to add tags to then entire batch. This adds an additional tag(s) to the images. It does not replace existing tags. To change existing tags choose Edit photos > Titles, tags & descriptions.
    • Add to a set: allows you to add the images to an existing set or a new one.
    • Send to group: adds the images to a group area.
    • Location:
      • Change geoprivacy: allows you to determine who can see where these images were taken.
      • Add to map: allows you to drag the images onto a map to set the geotag.
      • Remove items from map: allows you to delete the mapped images.
    • Prints and More: allows you to order prints, books, cards, etc. online for a fee.
    • Clear this batch: removes all the images from the batch area.
  3. Choose the Sets tab: This is where you can make new sets and modify existing sets. A set is like a photo album. One image can reside in multiple sets.
    • Double-click a set to open it and view the images inside.
    • You can now:
      • change the set name.
      • change the set description.
      • rearrange the images within the set. You can drag and drop the images or choose the Arrange sub-menu.
      • choose the Batch edit sub-menu to change permissions, etc.
      • print images.
    • Below the description click on Open set page. This takes you to a webpage for that set. This URL can be used to share the set with others. Users can also subcribe to the Set to receive information on new images as they are added (click the Feed link).
  4. Choose the Groups tab: You can add images to a Group.

    These images, regardless of the original permissions you set, will be fully available to all members of the group. They can view, comment on, tag and add notes the images. Note: the group must have been added previously using the Groups link on the top navigation from the Home page.

  5. Choose the Map tab: You can drag your images onto a map to tag their location.
  6. To exit click on Your photostream.

 


Contacts

 

Adding a contact allows you to control who can view your photos/sets. You can add people as a general contact, a family member or a friend. This info can be used later to determine privileges and rights.

  1. Click on Contacts from the top navigation menu. You will now see the recent uploads of anyone who is in your contacts list.
  2. Adding a new contact.
    1. Click on Invite from the Contacts sub-menu.
    2. Type the Email Address and Name for each person you wish to invite.
    3. Choose a category (either friends or family).
    4. In the right section of the window type in your name and an email that you wish your friends to receive.
    5. When ready, click Send.

 


Searching for Photos

 

  1. Click on You from the top navigation menu.
  2. Under Your photostream click on Tags. A tag cloud will appear.
  3. Click on a tag to search all of your images with one tag.
  4. To search on multiple tags click on search through multiple tags under All Your Tags.
    • Click all of the tags on which you want to search.
    • Choose whether you want to search on All selected tags or Any selected tags.
    • Click Display Photos

 


Downloading Images

 

Flickr does not have a batch downloading feature. However, there is a 3rd party application, sanctioned by flickr, that allows you to do this called downloadr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/api/discuss/169135/). downloadr is a Windows-only application.

 

You will need to download and install downloadr to complete the next tutorial.

 

Connecting downloadr to your flickr account

 

  1. Open downloadr
  2. From the Extras menu choose Authenticate. This will connect downloadr to your flickr account.
  3. Click Ok. Flickr will open and you will be asked to login.
  4. After logging in you will be informed that downloadr is trying to access your account. Click Ok.
  5. You are now connected to your account.

 

Searching for images in downloadr

 

  1. Open downloadr
  2. Choose the Search tab
  3. You can search by tags, user, text, place or any combination. Ex. if you search for baseball you will get all flickr images tagged as baseball. If you want to see only your baseball images you need to type baseball in the tag area and your username in the User box.
  4. When you have your criteria correct click on Search.
  5. Now from the right window select the images you wish to download. Shift-click selects adjacent items, Apple or Cmd-click selects non-adjacent images. Once you have everything selected, click Download selection.
  6. Choose the location on your computer to save the images and click OK. Note: you may want to create a special folder to house your downloads.
  7. When the download is complete click Yes to show the folder.
  8. You can use this same procedure to view and download your favorites and sets that you have already created.
