Step 1: Saving the Movie for Streaming
Using iMovie '08
- Open an existing iMovie project.
- From the Share menu choose Export using Quicktime.
- From the Where dropdown choose your save location. The Movies folder is the default.
- From the Export dropdown choose Movie to Quicktime Movie then click Options.
- From the Settings button, choose H.264 as your Compression type then click OK.
- Check the box next to Prepare for Internet Streaming then choose Hinted Streaming from the dropdown menu.
- Click OK
- Click Save.
Using iMovie 6.0
- Open an existing iMovie project
- From the File menu choose Export
- Choose QuickTime from the top navigation bar of the Export window
- From the dropdown menu next to Compress movie for choose Web Streaming
- Click Share
- NOTE: If you choose Expert Settings make sure that Hinted Streaming is selected under Prepare for Internet Streaming
- In the Save As: box type the name of the movie
- Choose the Desktop from the bottom area
- Click Save
Using Premiere Elements
- Open the file you wish to export to QuickTime for streaming.
- Go to File > Export > QuickTime
- Choose the size of the video on the left half of the window.
- Click OK
- Choose the location in which you wish to save the video (i.e. the Desktop), and type the desired filename.
- Click Save
Step 2: Posting the Streamed Movie
To make your videos accessible via the web you must copy your streamed video to the streaming server. Before you can do this you will need to request a folder on QTMovies. Do this by emailing the webmaster (webmaster@cofc.edu) and asking for a folder. Be sure to include who should be able to access the folder.
Connecting to the streaming server:
Macs:
- From the Go menu choose Connect to Server.
- In the Server address type smb://stream.
- Click Connect.
- The next window will ask for authentication. Type in your Cougars login and password with a domain of Cougars (this is the same as your email login and password). Click OK.
- From the next window choose QTMovies from the dropdown menu and click OK.
- An icon named QTMovies will now appear on your desktop.
- Double-click the QTMovies icon to open it and locate your folder. Double-click on your folder to open it.
- Drag your movie (.mov) from the desktop in the QTMovies > YourFolder folder.
- Your movie is now posted.
Windows:
- From the Start menu click on My Network Places.
- From the left side menu choose Add a network place.
- Click Next
- Select Choose another network location then click Next
- In the Internet or network address: type \\stream\QTMovies then click Next
- Click Next
- Click Finish.
Note: you may be asked to log in. If so, type in your Cougars login and password with a domain of Cougars (this is the same as your email login and password). Click OK.
- Double-click the QTMovies icon to open it and locate your folder. Double-click on your folder to open it.
- Drag your movie (.mov) from the desktop in the QTMovies > YourFolder folder.
- Your movie is now posted.
Step 3: Accessing the Streamed Movie
To view your streamed movie
- Open a browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.)
- Type in http://stream.cofc.edu/yourfolder/yourmoviename.mov where "yourmoviename.mov" is the actual name of your streamed video you moved to the server in Step 2.
To use your streamed movie in WebCT
The easiest way to add a streamed movie to WebCT is as a URL.
- From inside your WebCT class, choose Add Page or Tool.
- Under the Pages header choose URL
- Complete the Add URL form as follows:
- Next to Enter a Title for this item: type in the title you wish to use (i.e. the name of the movie clip)
- Next to Address: type in http://stream.cofc.edu/yourfolder/yourmoviename.mov where "yourmoviename.mov" is the actual name of your streamed video you moved to the server in Step 2.
- Next to Decide where to show the link to this item choose where you wish the icon for this clip to appear.
- Click Add
- You should now see an icon for your movie. In View mode, click on the icon to view the movie.
